We were inspired that the concept behind the phrase โ€˜Thick and Thinโ€™ is not just about the balanced use of geometry within woodworking but also about the durable bonds between loved ones...

That โ€˜familyโ€™ means stability and reliability through the unpredictable journey of life. That well-made objects are a witness to and a supporter of that journey. That heirlooms have value because of the role they played in our history.

We are interested in the journey that objects themselves might take and how they can embody the history of their own making in a way that is then implicit in their final form and character. Much as we humans see the world through the lens of our history and can offer forth to each other the precious aggregates of our own experiences.

We took 7 large blocks of Balau wood into our shop and began thinking through the subtractive nature of wood working. Many of the tools we use leave distinctive marks which is often simply a step towards achieving a previsualized form. However, for this project we thought about the tooling and ancillary hardware as an aesthetic in its own right; that which is usually hidden, erased or ignored becomes the design driver. While this approach may result in forms that embody a certain poetic quality, we consider each to be a functional object, a vessel with the potential to contain. Simply put they are not art. They offer utility. They speak of themselves, their history, their process, and will continue to speak of their imperfections and characteristics as they warp, crack, and age along with you.
